Miracle Morning - The Home Stretch

2 more days to go in September and for me the Miracle Morning has meant meditation. I've done 10 days of a motivation meditation 'pack' as they call it on the head space app and I am partway through a self esteem pack. It really is amazing how quickly the 10 minutes go by and how different I feel before and after.

We are all so busy multi tasking that getting a little head space each day is like a breath of fresh air. Yesterday I truly was not feeling good, thought I was getting sick and felt totally different after meditating.  The ibuprofen and vitamins I took probably helped too!

Looking ahead what will my October challenge be? I am going to participate in 'Making Your Home a Haven' as I did last year but that's easy, or at least the first week is.
How easy is it? Pick out your favorite candle scent. Buy the biggest candle in that scent you can find. Light it each day in your kitchen and say a prayer for your family. I can handle that. There's more to it as the month goes along but none of it is tough to do.

Here's a post from last year about 'Making You Home a Haven'

Stay tuned for more from My Middleton Chronicles and if you are inclined comment and tell me about what you do to stay happy, healthy and challenged in your life.

Miracle Morning - Do What You Love

When asked the secret or key to happiness Sandra Day O'Connor, Supreme Court Justice, answered without a moments hesitation. "Do what you love."

As the  first woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court in 1981 O'Connor was certainly a hugely accomplished person. Getting to a position like that takes hard work and passion. Words of wisdom from her are not be overlooked.

Does the concept of 'Do What You Love' seem like a pipe dream? Try switching it around a bit and figuring out, through enthusiasm and appreciation, how you can make what you are doing currently something you love. Self improvement and increased effort help with that. Balance can also help.
If you are in need of balance check out my recent post on avoiding splat, also known as crash and burn mymiddletonchronicles.blogspot.com/miracle-morning-and-splat

I visited a coffee shop yesterday and in talking with the owner it became apparent that she was doing what she loved. As she spoke of how people were starting to come from neighboring towns for her shops coffee because they loved it you could hear the pride in her voice.

At my husbands work the employees are currently involved in a steps challenge. Whoever gets the most steps is the winner and they are doing the challenge in teams. Increased energy that comes from increased physical activity can help with loving what you do. Smart employer.

What do you love? If you take notice of what activities energize you and what drains you it will help with identifying what you love.
Once you've identified it be conscious of making time for those things.

Have a great Thursday and stay tuned for more from My Middleton Chronicles.

The Miracle Morning and Splat

I recently read an article about 'splat' moments and the author talked about Hillary Clinton's moment when she had to leave the 9/11 event recently. 'Splat' could also be known as 'crash and burn'.
It comes when you are so busy that the time needed to take care of yourself is not available due to a crazy work schedule or unusual demands on your time.

In my work with real estate agents I have observed this in others and have experienced it myself. I'll never forget my own 'splat' moment in 2001 when I was walking a new construction lot of land with a buyer and his brother and I passed out. That's right fell on the ground passed out. It was horrifying and embarrassing and was my 'splat' moment.

Life is busy and the demands on our time are many. The Miracle Morning is a way to take care of yourself and still do all the things you want and need to do to reach your goals. It can be tough to do, it certainly takes discipline and my Miracle Morning is for sure a work in progress but the alternative of not reaching my goals or even worse having a 'splat' or 'crash and burn' episode is keeping me going.

Here's the Bernice Ross article,
Check out the part where she gives the formula for figuring out your hourly rate (2nd to last paragraph)

CoachingClues: Are You on the Road to Splat? - Bernice Ross
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Are you running with your business seven days a week, missing family events to handle client business, and constantly feeling stressed out? If so, you may be on the road to having a “splat” moment that can have serious consequences for both your health and your business.
I recently spoke for the Maryland Association of Realtors® on Winning the Mindset Game. During that session, I outlined a three-step model that alerts you when you need to make a major course change.
The Feather, Bat, Splat Warning Model
The first warning sign in this powerful model is the “feather.” The feather is that little voice inside that says, “You’re working too much, you’re not eating right, and you really do need to take some time off.” You may also be making little mistakes that you normally don’t make—you miss an appointment, you forget to pay a bill, or leave your phone at a restaurant.
The second step is the “baseball bat.” This occurs when you come down with a bad case of the flu, you have an abscessed tooth that requires a root canal, or your hard drive crashes and your data is wiped out along with it. Your business may be plagued with difficult clients, problem transactions, and computer issues.
If you ignore these warning signs, you may go “splat” by having a car accident, a major illness, or some other problem that keeps you from working weeks or even months.
A Very Public Splat Moment
As I watched the video of Hillary Clinton’s so-called “wobble,” it struck me that the events leading up to this event followed the model above. Clinton has struggled with persistent allergies and a cough for months (the feather).
Clinton’s physician, Lisa Bardack, revealed that in January, Clinton was suffering from sinusitis and an ear infection that required antibiotics, steroids, and myringotomy tube to be placed in her ear to drain the fluid (the baseball bat).
As Clinton’s cough worsened, she saw Bardack on September 9, 2016. Bardack informed Clinton that she had pneumonia and advised Clinton to amend her campaign schedule. Clinton refused. Instead, she attended the 9-11 event in New York City. The result was a very public “splat” moment that dominated the headlines.
How to Avoid Going Splat
Sadly, many real estate professionals end up working seven days a week, grabbing fast food on the run, and giving up precious family time to work on doing another deal. I know, because I did it for two decades. It’s taken years of coaching and work to break the habit.
Moreover, I don’t even remember those people’s names or what was so important that I was willing to sacrifice two decades of memories. What I do remember is the time spent with family, special events with friends, and the memories made having fun outside of work.
Take Time to Refuel
When you push seven days a week or work long hours, it’s the same as running your car 12 to 14 hours per day. Sooner or later you need to replenish your fuel. The only proven way to do this is to take time off.
As Ann Lamont observed, “Almost anything will work better if you unplug it…even you!”
What I’ve found is that after I take a day off, I get twice as much accomplished as I did on the day before my day off.
You Don’t Have to Be Available 24-7 to Succeed
Regular contact doesn’t mean 24-7. Instead, if you regularly update your clients with the latest activity on their listing, any new competing properties that have come on the market, or use a transaction management platform that notifies your clients of each step being taken in the transaction, there’s little reason for them to contact you. Unless something very unusual is happening, there’s no reason for you to give up your evenings and special times with loved ones. Virtually all real estate issues can wait until the next morning when you are back at work.
Identify What You Do Well and Delegate the Rest
How much do you make an hour? To answer this question, divide your net income from your Schedule C, LLC, or Corporate tax return by 2,000 (that’s 50 weeks at 40 hours per week.) For example, if you made $50,000, then your net hourly rate is $25.00 per hour.
What this means is that if you are doing $8.00 an hour work such as putting out signs, picking up lockboxes, or going to the post office, each of those activities costs your business $17.00 per hour. Hire someone else to do these simple chores so that you can generate the extra one or two listings per year to cover the cost.
Furthermore, if you hate doing paperwork, a transaction coordinator will get the job done faster and more accurately. This frees up your time to do more lead generation as well as making it easier for you to take time off.
When You Get the Feather, Pay Attention to It!
When your body starts telling you that you are doing too much, pay attention! You can’t help your clients if you’re home sick with the flu or if something else goes seriously wrong.
Instead, schedule a full day off, take time to enjoy your loved ones, and make a point to catch up on your sleep.
Also, be proactive about preventing problems by having regular physicals, visiting the dentist every six months, and having your eyes checked annually.
While it may be a challenge to do these things, it certainly beats the “splat” alternative.
Perfect VS. Good
10 days of Headspace with 6 days down and 4 to go.
The Miracle Morning efforts continue. As with any new endeavor it is a work in progress. Some days are better than others. The main thing is the effort and attempt to fit in things that I know are beneficial.
There are many versions of this quote which I think originally came from the book Good To Great written by Jim Collins. "Don't Let Perfect Be The Enemy Of Good." or "Don't Let Perfect Get In The Way Of Good." Or maybe it came from my guru Grethen Rubin.
I'm not going to get caught up in what I've done or not done. Instead the focus will be on daily improvement. One thing that has become clear over and over is that exercise should get done first thing or it may not ever get done. That will be my small goal for tomorrow. Get the exercise done and out of the way first thing.
Vision Board - Miracle Morning
Great Things Are Done By A Series Of Small Things Brought Together
A piece of The Miracle Morning is visualization. For me that brings to mind a vision board.  It must be from my experience with The Secret. Remember that book and video? I do believe in that stuff. One of the sayings that stuck with me goes something like this - 'what the mind can conceive one can achieve'. The thing that many people found lacking with 'The Secret' was the part about actually having to do something about getting what you want. That there is work and effort that has to go in to it to. You can't just visualize being thinner. You have to actually eat right and exercise. Money does not just fall off of trees if you visualize it. You have to work and earn a wage, create something you can sell and then sell it or find a product you believe in and sell that or some combination of all of the above.
The saying you see in the photo on this post hangs in my home office. At least it's supposed to be my home office. If you could see the desk you'd see that there are books my daughter purged out of her room next to it, pencils and markers that I dug out before going school supply shopping so we would not duplicate what we already have, an abandoned laptop of my husbands ... but I digress.
One of my mistakes of the past was to look for the quick fix. The nice thing about having some life experience behind me is that I now no there are very few overnight successes. There's always a story of hard work and perseverance behind it.
So after doing a prep day for The Miracle Morning and 3 actual days practicing it I made it to the weekend and am going to do some more prep work which brings me back to the vision board. I spent some time reading Boston Magazine this morning and the great thing about Boston Magazine is it illustrates lifestyles. We are lucky in Massachusetts that we have the great city of Boston and all it has to offer, there are mountains to our north and west and all that they offer and there are beautiful shores all up and down our coastline. The September issue ranks the top schools and takes on the debate of charter schools vs. public schools in one of the articles. Being a mom I am grateful that compared to other areas of the country you pretty much can't go wrong when choosing a school for your children. The public education here is excellent and there's no shortage of other choices when it comes to education.
So what I need to figure out for my vision board is what should go on it. What am I striving for in those small things that I will so that will come together to form something great?
One of them is for sure good health. Another is good personal relationships. The third would be professional success. One of the tasks from the start of The Miracle Morning was to rank from 1-10 where you are currently in these areas:
Spirituality
Finances
Career/Business
Romance/Significant other
Fun/Recreation
Contribution/Giving
Health/Fitness
Environment home/office
Family and Friends
I wrote a bit about it in this previous post http://mymiddletonchronicles.blogspot.com/miracle-morning/level-10-habits
How do I get to level 10 in these areas and which ones are most important to me?
Stay tuned for more of My Middleton Chronicles and if you have any comments or advice  on figuring this stuff out I'd love to hear them.
Miracle Morning Day 3
So don't be disappointed in me but I did not get up 1 hour early today. My plan is to still do the activities of the Miracle Morning just at different times of the day.
I'll try again next week! Have a great weekend everyone.
The Miracle Morning Day 3
My thoughts on affirmations ...
Are they goofy? Is it weird?
The affirmations that come with The Miracle Morning I like. Right now they are speaking to me. It's like having someone whisper really great stuff in your ear.
Day 3 is done. It was, again, tough to get up when the alarm went off. One more day this week and then it's the weekend ...
In other good news the Boston Red Sox are in 1st placed. Go Sox!
Miracle Morning Day 2 - Level 10 Habits
Level 10 Habits
To start this 'miracle' process based on the book 'The Miracle Morning' by Hal Elrod (which I still haven't read completely) readers are tasked with ranking areas of their life from 1-10.
Here are the areas that are ranked -
Personal growth and development
Spirituality
Finances
Career/Business
Romance/Significant other
Fun/Recreation
Contribution/Giving
Health/Fitness
Environment home/office
Family and Friends
The next question is what habits will help bring all of those areas to a level 10.
The things that you do during your extra time when you get up early are called the level 10 habits. There are 6 that are prescribed and there is room to add your own. I added planning meals to my list of habits. Very little extra time is needed and it is huge when trying to eat healthy.
As I was getting ready to do the meditation portion of the Miracle Morning a jogger ran by outside. I was not the only one up and doing something healthy. I will admit the thought of rolling over not getting up did cross my mind when my alarm went off.
So day 2 is done and I am still loving the meditation with the Headspace app, I added in another exercise and I am liking the affirmations.
Here's the quote I wrote in my planner "Today and every day I choose to create the best day of my life." The quote is not credited to anyone so I can't give credit but thanks to whoever you are.
Off I go to try and keep my level 10 going. Hope you choose to create your best day!
Miracle Morning Day 1
Today, day 1 of my Miracle Morning 30 Day Challenge,  was not a complete success but is was not a total fail either. I set my alarm for 5:30 PM. When I awoke at 6:00 AM I was confused about why my alarm did not go off. Aha ... Set for the wrong time of day. I've done that before so I was not surprised.
The Headspace App is my meditation and I picked the motivation pack. If you haven't heard of Headspace check it out. A cool monk named Andy takes you through guided meditation. The 1st 10 are in a pack called Take 10 and it's free. You do pay to access more. I paid for this a while ago, glad I am finally inspired to get some use out of it.
The sample meditations are good. I read them to myself. Will that make a difference? Just wasn't feeling saying them out loud.
Exercise - I did sets of hand weights, sit ups and planks. Added in some stretching and it felt good.
Hey, there's a reason to go to bed in yoga pants now! Tropical storm Hermine cancelled any plans for a walk, it's wet out there.
As I mentioned this blog is my scribing. I missed the reading due to lack of time but instead of surfing social media before bed last night I read a fun book so maybe that counts?
Off to get ready for the day!
August Challenges
How did it get to be August. 7 months of 2016 down 5 to go. One of my challenges has always been my desire to be a regular excersizer because I know how good it makes me feel but I have a very hard time actually doing it.
August challenge - walk every day. I'll track how I've done by posting here.
So I walked the dog last night. August 2nd done.
Now to get some walking in today ...
#MicroblogMonday - What a difference a week makes
Schedules, diets and challenges. New week new challenges.
The snow is gone and although it's not super warm at least the sun is out and the snow is pretty much gone. Last week at this time it felt more like February than April. My daughters softball season starts at long last tomorrow and we are getting ready for a much needed vacation.  They say when you need something done ask a busy person. The same goes for the week or day before a vacation. Getting super organized and getting everything done is a must. Efficiency is at an all time high. Motivation for getting things done is at an all time high.
The schedule is planned, the meals are planned, a little shopping is still needed as is a lot of packing. How happy am I to be shopping for sunscreen? VERY HAPPY. How happy am I that my dog care is all lined up? VERY HAPPY. Vacation can't come soon enough.
My April Challenge is cruising along. This weeks challenge is no take out or eating out. Easy peasy. We'll be eating out more than usual while on vacation so eating at home and making lunches each day would probably have been my plan anyway for this week.
As far as my social media diet I have really noticed how much more concentration I have now that the apps for my social media accounts are off of my phone. A total break from social media is not possible since some of what I do is for work but limiting it to when I am on my computer or ipad has made a big difference in how I spend my time.
Signing off for now and hoping you all have a great week! Wendy
Too Much of a Good Thing
A bender. That's what I have been on. For 2 full weeks now I have done pretty much nothing but eat out. I have not even been regularly making coffee at home. Yes, it's that bad.
For some, maybe those of you who live in New York City, that may not sound like anything terrible but where I live there are not the choices and options for amazing, healthy food that exist in other places. I live in the suburbs. Delivery is Chinese food or pizza. Chain restaurants abound.
That's not to say I've been eating all awful food but there has been a lot of it. Everyone knows there is no such thing as bad pizza and we do have an amazing sushi place nearby. The sunken table that you have to take your shoes off to access has hosted me on several occasions recently. The 'Volcano' is as deadly as it sounds and is so good with seafood and some kind of sauce over sushi rolls.  I also went to a fondue establishment I have been wanting to try for YEARS. I had been hinting to my husband to take me there to no avail. I finally got there and yes it lived up to my expectations. Fondue is a blast!
My 'last supper' so to speak was the lunch out with my sister yesterday. Brazilian barbecue short ribs were my choice, rich scallops and risotto was hers. $32 scallops and risotto which brings me to my next point - I have been thoroughly enjoying my cosmopolitan cocktail, dirty martini and wine soaked eating out binge however my wallet is feeling a bit light from it. Too much of a good thing.
Time to get back on the healthy eating wagon and plan some homemade meals. I belong to a great online group 'Healthy Meals for Busy Lives'. I've got some meals planned and my resolve fortified.
It's been fun and I hate to see the fun come to an end but alas it is a must. Here's the start to my plan for getting back on track. Crockpot soups to the rescue! So far it's Italian Wedding and a Tortilla or Taco soup.
I am thinking about following one of those plans where you make 40 "dump" meals in a weekend and put them in your freezer. One of the ladies in the 'Healthy Meals' group did it recently and it worked out great. Have any of you tried it?
My 'Healthy Meals' friend says she spent about $450 and it took 2 days of cooking but her family is loving the dinners and it's saving her tons of time during hectic weekdays.
Here's a link to the plan she followed whoneedsacape.com/40+meals
So here's a questions - how do you stay on track and out of trouble during busy weeks? Would love to hear from you and learn!
All my best, Wendy
#MicroBlogMonday - 40 Bags Challenge
For today's #MicroBlogMonday I'll tell you a bit about my next challenge. Some people climb mountains and others run marathons. Me? I'm going to get rid of 40 bags in 40 days. The challenge starts February 10th and runs until March 26th with Sundays off.
I've got a Facebook group going of ladies (and 1 brave guy!) who are doing this with me. The Wednesday start will be here before I know it! First order of business the 'drawer of shame' or as others may know it the junk drawer. I've got a poll going in the group to see what they plan on tackling first.
There's even a tracking sheet. Wish us luck & if you'd like to join me let me know and I can add you to the facebook group.
Health week - January Challenges for a Happier Life
This week has been named "Health Week". As such I will be making all of the appointments that I have been putting off. For no reason. Basically just my poor time management. OK that's not true, that's me being tough on myself. Whatever the case may be I cannot put off these annoying appointments any longer. I actually made a commitment to myself to get these scheduled back in December and well, here we are.
Health week  to do's -
Squish appointment
Skin check appointment
Dentist regular check up (appointment set)
The difficulty with these tasks comes from the little things that need to happen before the actual tasks are done. For example for my yearly squish of the girls to check for the dreaded C word I need to find the contact info for the place I have been going for the last 8 years. Yes that's right last 8 years. You would think I would have that on hand but with the age of the smart phone upon us that contact info was lost 2 smart (or not so smart) devices ago. It has not been 2 years since my last squish. Just 2 phones ago.
As for the dentist appointment that has been put off because I really was not loving the office I had been going to even though it is super conveniently located. I bit the bullet yesterday and made the call to get an appointment at a much better office, at least I hope it is.
The skin check is an appointment that also has been put off a bit but in cleaning out my wallet yesterday I found the business card for the dermatologist my Dr referred me to. That contact info has been the thing standing in the way of that appointment.
It's Wednesday. It's a short week with the Monday holiday. I know I will be happier without these necessary appointments lurking around undone. Challenges for a happier life - take care of tasks that weigh on my mind. Get sh%$ done.
Thanks for reading. How do you handle getting in all the appointments that you and those you care for need in a given year? Do you have things you should be dealing with when it comes to your health and the care and keeping of you that you've been putting off? C'mon make me feel better and tell me I'm not alone in this.
I have resolved to do a better job with getting those regular appointments scheduled and taken care of in 2016. The next challenge will be actually getting to said appointments.
My best, Wendy
2016 - The Challenges Continue
Challenges for a Happier Life 2016 starts now!
Holiday creations
The Challenges continue and the theme for January is balance.
Work, family, marriage, friends. Required work that must be done, work that brings Joy.
Figuring out what brings joy and creates balance was for me the first step to adding those things to my days.
The monthly challenges that I worked on the last 3 months of 2015 helped me understand that being creative is a huge piece of the balance puzzle for me.
Getting creative over the holidays was a blast. My husband was very thoughtful and my gift from him was a really nice camera and I'm so looking forward to having fun with it and learning to take great photos. Until then, my phone camera photos will have to suffice. Excuse the ametuer nature of them, thanks.
My creative challenge for January is to find a desk to refinish and create a home office that I love to work in. My space at my office also could use some help so I'll also spend some time making that area one that I love to work in. I tend to use the conference room in my office instead of my private space because things are not exactly neat. (even after my big de-clutter!)
Project piece
2016 arrived last night and with it new energy.
I plan on writing 2 posts this month that may be of interest and I thought I'd mention them today and then spend some time thinking through the ideas. Follow my blog or subscribe by email to get notified when these posts are up.
The first January post that I am working on will be a recap of all of my influencers from in this past year and what I learned from them. Documentaries, Ted Talks, movies and biographies are all part of my media consumption.  I am a big reader and there are several authors who spoke to me in 2015. There are also books that I could not complete, which is always interesting in its own way.  In a given year I take classes that are for my professional growth, some mandatory and some by choice, and classes for my own personal growth. This past year was no exception.
In January you can expect a post with my take aways from a year of listening, learning, watching and reading.
The second post that is on the horizon is my take on being an 'Intreprenuer'.
When considering how to become more engaged in my work life and make it more exciting I took on the mindset of intreprenuership. There is a lot of discussion and hype surrounding entreprenuership and I admire entreprenuers. That said many of us work for employers, companies or operate under a franchise and in those settings there is room to innovate just as entreprenuers do without the risk. Real estate agents who work under a broker are intraprenuers. (at least in my book)
I'll leave you with the dictionary's definition of the word intrepreneur. It is a word that is new to me although I now know it has been around for 150 years:
in-tra-pre-neur (In¹tre-pre-nur) n. A person within a large corporation who takes direct responsibility for turning an idea into a profitable finished product through assertive risk-taking and innovation
As you can see I've got big plans. Check back here to see how I'm doing. As always your comments and feedback are welcome. I love learning from all of you.
Happy New Year! Wendy
How Run DMC and My Favorite Author Help Me #staymerry
My tweet today says it all-   #balance #HolidayAreComing #staymerry
I call it spinning plates, others call it the juggle. No matter what you call it if you are a mom whose family celebrates Christmas and it is 2 days, 12 hours and 20 seconds (as of this writing) until Christmas you are most likely doing more than one thing at a time, spinning plates, juggling, etc or you are paralyzed by all there is to do.
You may be somewhere in between but I know you get the picture.
And then the text comes in - "mom I need insert food item here & insert drink here for the insert name of  party tomorrow. they told us last minute nothing i could do about telling you earlier"
We were past this type of fire drill request for a while but now that my youngest daughter is busier with school and sports the last minute requests and emergencies are again part of the equation.
Balance
Here are a few tips to #staymerry
  •  Lists are your friend. Lock your phone so prying eyes do not see said lists but make them and check them 10 times. Twice just won't do it, at least for me with my executive function on overload this time of year.
  • Don't forget to eat & stay hydrated. You are so busy planning meals and celebrations full of yummy food and drink that you may forget that you still need meals TODAY. If all else fails eat the lunch your son forgot to bring to school that is still on the counter.
  • Remember to check your calendar. It happens to me once or twice a year that I will show up somewhere at the wrong time or on the wrong day and it is all the more likely to happen around the holidays. You are out of your usual routine and the days can get mixed up when there's a holiday on a weekday.
  • Ask for help. Spouses, kids, guests, they are all potential helpers. Don't be afraid to ask and don't be so controlling that you can't ask. I got over that years ago. (I think, I'll double check with my family to make sure that statement is accurate)
  • This tip came from author Gretchen Rubin - "Act the way you want to feel." Have a headache? Feeling a bit grouchy? Take some advil, watch a funny video or listen to Run DMC's Christmas in Hollis Here you go, I'll even give you a link so you can do it right now YouTubeChristmasInHollis  Then put a smile on your face. Trust me it works.
  • Last but not least, get as much done as you can and by the time 3:00 PM on the 24th rolls around then let it all go and enjoy your holiday.
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. Best wishes for the new year to one and all.
Oh and if you'd like follow me on twitter @wendyenglish
2016 here we come!
Wendy's Top 5 Holiday Flicks
There's nothing better this time of year than settling in to watch a holiday movie. Here are my favorites that I can watch over and over -
5. #5 is a tie between Charlie Brown Christmas, which is my teenage sons favorite of the season and Home Alone, my teenage daughters fav.
4. A Christmas Story -  The Bumpus hounds stealing the turkey right off the table is one of the most memorable scenes and having had 2 dogs plus a visiting cousin dog last Christmas I can relate to the craziness of the holiday with hounds.
3. Planes, Trains and Automobiles - Who wouldn't love the endearing Dell Griffin playes by one of the funniest actors of all time, John Candy? The theme of coming home for the holidays is a classic and the hilarious situations that John Candy and Steve Martin's characters find themselves in keep me laughing no matter how many times I have watched the movie (which is a lot!).
2. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - It is hard to choose a favorite part or favorite character. From Aunt Edna to Clark and Uncle Eddie the characters and story lines are all a crack up. I have laughed so hard at some parts that I miss what happens next giving me a great excuse to watch the movie again.
1. My #1 favorite holiday move of all time is Love Actually. Warning, there is some nudity so be careful who you watch with. Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson and Colin Firth in different holiday, romantic plotlines that are spoofs on romcoms is just the thing to get me in the holiday spirit. Add Rowan Atkinson and lots of Brittish accents and slang making this a flick I can watch year after year. The upbeat soundtrack adds even more to the fun.
It would be great for a new breakout, holiday movie to hit the screens. Until then I'll keep watching my hitlist.
What are your favorite movies this time of year? I'd love to hear from you in the comments.
3 Things I Learned From My 2015 "Smart" Year
"The days are long but the years are short." - Gretchen Rubin
Everyone I come across is saying it - "Where did the year go?" "How can the holidays be here again already?"
It is so easy to let days, months and even years slip by barely noticing. I am thinking that it must be a mid-life thing to finally take notice of this phenomenon. Or I am just really slow to catch on.
I am now in a place where I get it. Time flies by. The things that are important today will be distant memories soon, if we even think about them at all. Last year on New Years Day my husband and I made a list for our "Smart Year 2015". It was long.
Two sheets of 8 1/2 X 11 printer paper taped together vertically with a colorful magic marker list of all of the things we were going to tackle in the new year. I don't have the document itself handy but I will tell you that it hung on our closet door and then on a kitchen cabinet for periods of time in 2015.
Although we made the list together and were enthusiastic at the time we were writing it (over a bacon & egg New Years Day breakfast) that list became a source of true conflict between us.
On it were things like date night, the 52 week saving plan, Sunday outings with our kids with each child getting a turn at picking the activity and more. I think we included eating right and exercise. Sounds great doesn't it? While we both would agree that all of the "Smart" things on the list were worthwhile the list created arguments and strife. It took a lot of soul searching and research to figure out why. Many lessons were learned. Here are the top three -
#1 - Don't take on more than you can realistically handle. The "Smart Year"  list was too long. Taking on one thing at a time would have been the truly "Smart" way to tackle saving money, spending more quality time together and eating right and exercising. Some of the goals could be paired together and later in the year without even knowing it we did that by joining a walking group. That group paired together date night that was not going out to eat, exercise and saving money (it was 5 bucks to join!) Pairing is a strategy I learned about in my 21 Day De-Clutter Challenge. Read more about the De-Clutter Challenge here - 21 Days To Less Clutter
#2 - Time it right. Only YOU know when you are ready to tackly big goals. Although all of the ideas sounded great in theory to both my husband and I we had differing levels of commitment to each of the "Smart" goals. The start of a new year may feel like a great time to embark on a journey of self improvement and resolutions if you are not ready it is not the best time. Resolutions and goals can be started at any time
Some goals are best worked on together, others are better individual goals. My guy was not ready for the eating right portion of the "Smart" year.
As of this writing though he is about 10 days in to a 21 day period of eating clean. Lots of veggies and lean meat, no gluten,  dairy or alchohol. We are thinking he may have a gluten allergy and he has always been sensitive to dairy products. Because he is feeling so good he is very committed to the 21 days of eating clean.
#3 - Prepare to succeed. A big reason we did not succeed with the "Smart Year" is that we needed to learn some things. Read a book written by an expert, take a class or talk with someone who has successfully done what you want to do.  Another one of the more important lessons learned by our "Smart Year" experiment gone wrong is to take big goals and break them down in to small steps. How do you eat an elephant? A bite at a time.
That seems to be theme of mine since it was the title of a previous post -
Does eating elephant bite at time work?
For 2016 one of my goals is to keep posting. Hold me to it!
As always thanks for checking in and I'd love to hear any comments and feedback.
December Challenge
My advent wreath
Here I go again - Challenges for a happier life.
Doing the things you want to do, need to do, know are good for you and you feel better (or even feel awesome when you do them) comes naturally for some people.
For others, like me, we get stuck in ruts, develop bad habits and forget or neglect the things that bring health and happiness.
Through my series of personal challenges that I started back in April I learned that I am better at sticking with good habits when a few key things are in place.
Number one on the list of key things that help me stick to a habit I need is a defined time frame. A month, 21 days ... it helps me to have a defined period of time for the challenge. During that time I am able to evaluate whether or not the activity is worthwhile and whether or not it delivers the results I am looking for. For example the task of de-cluttering a family home can seem daunting but breaking it down in to 21 tasks over 21 days makes it less so.
Second on the list of  key elements to a challenge for me that helps me stick to the challenge is having a buddy. Doing things with others automatically makes it more fun and provides accountability. A buddy can bring needed energy. You can cheer one another on when needed and vent about the ups and downs faced in the challenge.
Lastly, blogging or writing about the challenge I am doing always seems to help me stick to it. What gets written down gets done. I have heard that statement said many times in different ways and I find it to be true.
So what is on tap for December? My challenge for a happier life for December is going to church service every week of Lent. As of this writing I have 2 down and 2 to go. Why this challenge? I have found that I am not making the time for church, even though it is something that I love. Hopefully my dedication to going in the month of December will get me in a great frame of mind for the Christmas holiday.
Truth be told there are 2 other things I put on my "challenge" list for December and I have not faithfully been doing the other 2. What were they? Meditating for 10 minutes a day 10 days in a row (I got as far as day 2) and walking at least 20 minutes each day. It is only December 7th so as I am writing this I am resolving to get those 2 additional challenges back on my to-do list.
What things do you wish you had the time for or would you like to make the time for that you think would improve your life? Would a challenge like this help you fit it in? I'd love to hear from you in the coments.
All my best, Wendy
